The Best DIY Baby Powder: Simple, Cheap and Incredibly Safe

Finding more than eight ingredients when reviewing brands of natural baby powder left me stumped.

How could such a simple product require so many ingredients?

So much is absorbed by the skin into the body, and in no way were we ok with using cheap Johnson & Johnson products on our baby. We wanted to use as clean of products as we could find (and I’ll add doing it this way ends up being cheaper than buying bottle after bottle at the store).

I began the search to find a safer alternative for our baby.

However, my search returned complicated recipes with complicated ingredients.

Fed up, I took the consistent base ingredients and created my own simple, clean, and very safe baby powder made with food-safe ingredients.

I wanted to be sure the powder wouldn’t be harmful since it would be used on sensitive parts especially since it’s close to areas of the face, mouth, and nose.

Baby Powder Ingredients + Supply List

Bentonite clay, arrowroot powder, essential oils, powder bottle

I felt strongly about creating this recipe from food-safe ingredients.

If our son decided to grab the bottle to powder his own bum, powder his brother’s bum, or if he decided to grab the bottle, give a squeeze and we’re covered in white (yeah, that’s happened), I didn’t want anyone freaking out.

  • Food Grade Organic Bentonite clay powder – my first choice, and my second one.
  • Arrowroot powder – check to see if your local health food store stocks it in the bulk section
  • Lavender essential oil
  • Melaleuca essential oil
    • *optional* Roman Chamomile can be used in place of Lavender
  • 16 or 32 oz mason jar for mixing and storing
  • Empty powder bottles (the Gold Bond powder bottles in the travel section at Target for $1 work great. For my life, I have yet to find small powder bottles like these anywhere. I empty the hot talc and thoroughly clean the bottle to remove all traces of the stinging powder)

It’s most cost-effective to purchase the items in bulk, and this provides enough material to last over 3 months depending on the usage.
