Essential Oil Safety – Overlooked Fundamentals You Need to Know

Using essential oils can be simple and life-changing at the same time. The beauty of oils is that it accepts the differences between each individual, and allows one to find a combination that works well for them. There are, however, a few precautions that should be taken when using oils for the first time:
  • Practice essential oil safety at all times, especially when using oils on children and pets.
  • To dilute an oil down if too much is applied, DO NOT use water. USE OIL TO OIL. Use fractionated coconut, oil, apricot, or any other oil carrier but not water. Water will simply make it spread farther versus driving it into the body faster to reduce cooling/warm sensations.
  • Use only 100% pure-therapeutic grade essential oils. If an oil bottle states it should not be applied topically or is harmful if ingested – it is not pure.
  • Follow all label warnings for contraindications, and instructions.
  • Keep oils out of reach of children.

  • Essential oils should not be used in the eyes, ear canal, or on completely open wounds.
  • Keep essential oils away from the eyes. After applying oils, especially cooling/hot oils, keep hands away from the eyes to avoid burning. Note: water merely spreads the oil as water and oil do not mix together.
  • Do not use oils on a child’s hands as they may transfer oils to the eyes.
  • Always use caution and dilute “hot” oils such as cinnamon, oregano, cassia; and minty ones such as peppermint, DeepBlue, Breathe, eucalyptus, and others similar.

  • Oils are safe for children, HOWEVER, DILUTE oils when using on infants, young children, and those with more sensitive skin.
  • Unless an oil has a Nutrition Label on it, is approved by the FDA, or approved as GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) which states that it is safe for internal consumption, do NOT consume an oil internally.
  • Avoid the sun after using citrus oils which become sensitive to skin with sunlight.
  • Consult with your physician before using essential oils if you are pregnant, under a doctor’s care, or have any specific health condition. Oils are natural, yet very powerful and effective alternative remedies that can adversely interact with specific health conditions. Always consult with a health professional or conduct your own research prior to using an oil.

  • If pregnant, avoid most essential oils without FIRST doing further research by looking at the contraindications for pregnancy.
  • Always be proactive in doing your own research to determine what is best for your individual needs and concerns.
